Cathy Alexander – Events Manager

Australian Event AwardsCathy has an impressive background which includes 25 years’ experience in event management.

This encompasses the design of special events for both domestic and international incentive clients – elaborately themed off-site dinners, lunches, product launches, entertainment and special effects.

Before joining the Tropical Catering & Events team, Cathy was head of Sales and Business Development at Events NQ, Cairns leading exhibition equipment hire company.  This involved her overseeing ENQ’s own signature events – Sheraton Mirage’s Longest Lunch, Food, Wine and a Taste of Port – Trinity Lunch and the annual NQ Wedding Expo.

Cathy’s experience includes 10 years with Hannafords Special Events where she delivered offsite catering solutions to many remote and challenging locales.  She was also instrumental in the creation and launch of the award winning, Flames of the Forest, the region’s most successful off-site dinner venue.

Joanne Neill – Business Development Manager


Jo brings to the team more than 20 years of hospitality experience spanning sales & marketing, F&B operations and product management. She has held roles in the tourism industry both locally and in the United States.

Since arriving in Cairns in 2007, Jo has worked extensively in the Conferencing & Events industry. Her operational experience combined with her project management skills complement the Tropical Catering and Events team.


Volkmar Friedlingsdorf – Executive Chef

Volkmar Friedlingsdorf Volkmar was born and educated in Germany, including his apprentice ship and hotel school training.

In Australia, since 1991 his work experience includes the opening of new hotels in Sydney as an Executive chef. After a brief two-year return to Germany, he returned to Australia. Starting initially in Cairns with Accor, as an executive chef and attaining his diploma of hospitality he then moved to Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas where for the last two and half years was part of their reopening and renovation.

Now as the new executive chef at the Pacific Hotel Cairns, Bushfire Flame Grill, and Tropical Events catering team, he is looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities ahead.
